NEWSThree NEW rockets with Patent Pending removable fin
design. Great for your first large model rocket kit, uses 24mm single Estes
"E" engine for easy launches. See the Boy Scout I, Cobra, and
Space
Dragon.
The Boy Scout I model rocket is great for the
boy scout space exploration merit badge and will definitely make you top dog
in any troop.

Our Mission
My
dad and I have been building
Estes rockets for over 7 years and we wanted to build something larger. I was
startled to find how expensive it was to get into high power rocketry. Kits
costing $100 +, Engines costing $15 + each, there was nothing in-between. We
decided to custom build our own rockets. Our design has evolved over the last
four years, but the basic design remains. We have taught many dads and sons
through the YMCA trail blazer program how to build these mid power, 5 1/2 ft tall
rockets. The basic design has had over 100 successful flights. All of our
friends have always said, you guys should make this into a kit and sell it.
So we have.
Our design goals:
-
Easy to build.
-
Over 5 ft tall.
-
Had to look real cool even standing still.
-
Large 3 diameter base tube and smaller 2 diameter
upper section.
-
Sturdy construction/reliable recovery.
-
Easily to replace inexpensive parts.
-
Easy to store and transport to the flying field.
-
Slow, realistic, cool looking liftoff.
-
Under $100 cost and use easy to obtain Estes E engines
How we met these goals.
-
The kit has all the parts cut, only gluing and sanding
are involved. (Ok, so you have to drill a few holes, but these are very easy to do). The only glue you need is Elmers and plastic model cement, no fancy (expensive) epoxies. Fin slots are
precut.
-
The competed rocket stands 67 ½ tall (5ft 7 ½)
-
Look at our photos you have to admit the rocket looks
pretty neat. Crystal Clear water slide decals are included. You supply the
primer and paint and the rocket will look like the one pictured.
-
Most rockets are just a tube and a nose cone, we wanted
a more sophisticated look, so we decided on a 3 tube with a transition
going to a 2 tube.
-
We use heavier tubing for strength and a 45 rip stop
nylon parachute (edges are machine sewn, so no fraying). Parachute and
hardware are included in the kit. Our bulk heads and engine mount rings are
plywood and basswood (all are precut actual pieces). Fins are basswood and
thru the wall.
-
Since the fins are removable, they are easy to replace
or repair. Fins are typically the part that might break. In four years, we
have had 2 broken fins.
-
We saw how clumsy big rockets were to transport to the
flying field. We saw a $100+ rocket that got wrecked just on the drive to
the field. Even when completed the rocket will come apart in two sections,
remove a locking dowel and the fins come off (they really do) and the rocket
will FIT BACK INTO THE BOX we shipped the kit in!! This rocket will fit
into the trunk of the smallest car. The box is only 4 feet long.
-
We realized, most of the crowd, dont really care if
the rocket went to 1500 ft vs 1200 ft. They like to watch the liftoff. If
the liftoff happens in a split second, there is nothing to watch. Because
of the heavier tubing we use, the liftoffs are nice and slow. You can
actually see twin flames coming out the bottom. It looks awesome! Look at
the photos. So, if you looking to set altitude records, buy some other
rocket, if want the crowd to cheer and clap when you fly your rocket, this
is the one to buy!
-
Definitely costs less than $100. The design use (2)
Estes E9-4 engines for power. These engines are easy to find on the
internet from $11.00 to $14.00 for a pack of 3 engines.
We have met all 9 of our design goals with our Viper-28 and
Lunar Spacelines rocket kits. These rockets will be a showpiece for any rocket
collection. For pure enjoyment of launching and flying model rockets, this
rocket is hard to beat.

Company Profile
Rocket in a box is owned by Cory Kerr and his
dad Douglas. Although the
company started in August 2004 we have been flying the rocket design in our kits for
over 4 years. We plan to add many more model rocket kits, but every kit will be designed to
fit back in the shipping box for easy storage and transportation.
